The best way to level in WoW Forever is to quest through the old zone order, run each dungeon once while its quests sit in your log, and lean on the new content where the old map was thin. That means the Riverglades from the mid-30s to the mid-40s and nine new dungeons between level 13 and 60. This WoW Forever leveling guide walks you through the whole 1–60 route for Alliance and Horde, the dungeons worth a group, riding at 40 and 60, and what plays differently from WoW Classic.

Servers go live on November 4, 2026. Character creation opens on October 27. And 60 is the cap for good, so you learn this route once and keep it.

  • Method: quest first. Do one run per dungeon with its quests picked up, and grind only when you're a bit short for the next zone.
  • Route: home zone to 10, your faction's second zone to about 20, then the shared mid-level zones. Both sides spend roughly 35 to 45 in the Riverglades.
  • Dungeons: Hall of Thanes (Alliance, 13–18) and Ruins of Lordaeron (Horde, 15–20) come first. Then Excavation Site, City of Dalaran, The Drowned City, Krol'dok Stronghold, Alcaz Island Prison, Blackmaw Hold and Shaper's Terrace, all the way to 60.
  • Riding: 40 for the first lesson, 60 for epic. You pay the trainer, and the mount comes with it.
  • Professions: two gathering skills on your first character. Add Cooking too, since crafted food gives a small XP bonus.
  • Hard rules: no flying, no level scaling, and no groups across factions or rulesets.

What Do You Need Before You Start Leveling?

A normal World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time already covers WoW Forever. You won't pick a realm. You pick a region, EU or US, and a ruleset: Normal, PvP or Roleplaying at launch, with Hardcore joining in December. Factions stay apart, and different rulesets can't group, so sort it out with your friends before October 27.

That's the day names open. A name has two parts and has to be unique in your region. Three more things are worth deciding early:

  • Race and starting zone. The Skyborne, the new neutral race, begin on Zephras Isle and need the Heroic Pack or a bigger edition. Every other race starts in its old home zone.
  • Class. Pet classes and hybrids rest the least between pulls. Melee classes that live on gear are slower alone. Our breakdown of the best starting class in WoW Forever puts all nine side by side for a first character.
  • Gold. Forever has no WoW Token. Training, bags and riding all come out of gold you earn on the road, and a gathering profession picked up around level 5 covers most of it.

What Changed From WoW Classic Leveling?

Less than you might fear. The map and the zone order are mostly the same, so Classic veterans will feel at home fast. What's new is extra content on top, quicker solo fights and a few quality-of-life fixes. Here's everything Blizzard has confirmed as different, so you know which old habits still work and which ones you can drop.

TopicWoW ClassicWoW Forever
Level cap6060, permanent; no seasons that reset characters
Zones and questsOriginal worldOriginal world plus 4 new zones and more than 1,000 new quests, including new chains in every starting area, the Wetlands and Desolace

Fight lengthVaries widely by classA normal solo fight is tuned to about 10–15 seconds for every class
Leveling weaponsWhatever dropsWarriors, Hunters and Rogues receive weapons as they level; casters get weapons with spell damage
Dungeon XPMob XP drives dungeon levelingStill being tuned on the beta: extra XP from dungeon quests was cut by 50% on October 1, mob XP inside dungeons was raised by about 20% on October 8
RidingLevel 40 and 60, mount bought separatelyLevel 40 and 60; the cost is paid as training and the lesson includes the mount
Downtime toolsFood, drink, innsPlus camping (campfires and profession camp objects with buffs) and crafted food with a small XP bonus
TravelClassic boats and flight pathsNew ships: Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine, Menethil Harbor–Southshore–Auberdine, and a Steamwheedle ship from Tanaris

The upshot? Your class matters less for kill speed than it did back then. Walking and resting decide most of your pace now. A clean quest log and fewer long runs on foot will save you more time than any talent tweak.

WoW Forever Leveling Route for Alliance

There's no official route from Blizzard, and the full game only opens on November 4. What you see below is the order that worked in Classic for years. We slotted Forever's confirmed additions into their announced level bands. Read the levels as rough targets, because new quest chains can make an old zone busier or emptier than you remember.

LevelZones (Classic-proven order)New in WoW Forever
1–10Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh or Teldrassil (by race)New quests and NPCs in every starting area; Skyborne play Zephras Isle (1–12)
10–20Westfall, Loch Modan or DarkshoreHall of Thanes under Ironforge (13–18); the Stormwind–Auberdine ship links the continents early
20–25Redridge Mountains, Darkshore, AshenvaleWetlands additions (more than 25 new quests)
25–30Duskwood, Wetlands, AshenvaleExcavation Site in the Wetlands (26–31 in the October 1 beta notes); City of Dalaran (28–33)
30–35Hillsbrad Foothills (Southshore), Arathi Highlands, Thousand Needles, DesolaceNew Desolace chains; Menethil–Southshore–Auberdine ship
35–45Stranglethorn Vale, Dustwallow Marsh, Badlands, Swamp of SorrowsThe Riverglades (Alliance start: Farhold Keep), The Drowned City (35–40), Krol'dok Stronghold (40–45)
45–50Tanaris, Feralas, The HinterlandsSteamwheedle ship from Tanaris; Alcaz Island Prison (48–53)
50–55Searing Gorge, Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, AzsharaNew Azshara quests
55–60Burning Steppes, Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring, SilithusBlackmaw Hold (55–60), Shaper's Terrace (58–60)
60EndgameMount Hyjal; raids from December 9

Alliance tips. The new ships help you most. Playing a Human with a Night Elf friend? Sail from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine and quest together in Darkshore, no trip across two continents. The three-stop line from Menethil Harbor through Southshore to Auberdine also kills the old run through Ironforge whenever you hop between the Wetlands, Hillsbrad and Kalimdor.

For Hall of Thanes, grab every quest in Old Ironforge before you step in. Level 15 or 16 with a full log is the sweet spot.

WoW Forever Leveling Route for Horde

Horde players start in Durotar, Mulgore or Tirisfal Glades and mostly meet in the Barrens. From the 30s on, the route runs much like the Alliance one, with the same new dungeons and the Riverglades in the middle.

LevelZones (Classic-proven order)New in WoW Forever
1–10Durotar, Mulgore or Tirisfal Glades (by race)New quests and NPCs in every starting area; Skyborne play Zephras Isle (1–12)
10–20The Barrens, or Silverpine Forest for UndeadRuins of Lordaeron above Undercity (15–20)
20–25The Barrens, Stonetalon Mountains, Hillsbrad FoothillsExpanded early-zone quests
25–30Ashenvale, Thousand Needles, Hillsbrad FoothillsExcavation Site in the Wetlands (26–31 in the October 1 beta notes); City of Dalaran (28–33)
30–35Arathi Highlands, Desolace, Thousand NeedlesNew Desolace chains
35–45Stranglethorn Vale, Badlands, Dustwallow Marsh, Swamp of SorrowsThe Riverglades (Horde start: Rogmar), The Drowned City (35–40), Krol'dok Stronghold (40–45)
45–50Tanaris, Feralas, The HinterlandsSteamwheedle ship from Tanaris; Alcaz Island Prison (48–53)
50–55Searing Gorge, Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, AzsharaNew Azshara quests
55–60Burning Steppes, Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring, SilithusBlackmaw Hold (55–60), Shaper's Terrace (58–60)
60EndgameMount Hyjal; raids from December 9

Horde tips. The Barrens is still the big early hub, and launch week will be packed. Playing Undead and want quieter fields? Hang around Silverpine till 20 or so and then head down into Hillsbrad on foot. As for Ruins of Lordaeron, it's basically next door to Undercity. You'll get most of its quests in Undercity and Tirisfal, so grab those first and only then shout for a group.

Skyborne: After Zephras Isle

Skyborne spend levels 1 to 12 on Zephras Isle, a starting story of their own. You pick the faction at character creation: Windshapers go Horde, the High Order goes Alliance. Level 12 lands right in the middle of the second-zone band. On the Alliance side that means Westfall, Loch Modan or Darkshore. On the Horde side, the Barrens or Silverpine. After that, just follow your faction's route.

Where Does the Riverglades Fit on the Route?

Right in the middle. You level there from the mid-30s to the mid-40s, on both factions. It's one of four new regions at launch and the one that changes leveling most. Stay as long as it keeps handing you quests, because it covers much of the thin stretch Stranglethorn and Dustwallow used to carry alone.

You find it on the eastern side of the Eastern Kingdoms, through a new fork on the road from Redridge toward the Burning Steppes. It's about as big as Stranglethorn Vale. Inside: more than 150 quests with separate Horde and Alliance stories, new reputations and Powderfuse Port, a neutral goblin harbor.

The other three? Zephras Isle is the Skyborne start, and Mount Hyjal is the zone for level 60. Shen'dralas, entered from southern Desolace, has no level range announced yet, so it stays off the route until Blizzard gives one. Stories, entrances and quest hubs for all four are in our overview of the WoW Forever new zones.

Which Leveling Dungeons Are Worth Running?

All of them, once each, at the right level and with the quests already in your log. That's where you get quest XP in bulk and your first blue gear. The old dungeons keep their bosses, but Forever gave them new loot. And you can't zone in below the minimum level.

Boss lists and loot for most of the new dungeons aren't public yet. Our guide to the WoW Forever dungeons keeps track of what the beta has shown so far.

No dungeon finder has been announced. You'll build groups by hand inside your faction and ruleset, so tanks and healers get picked first. Want to do the climb through instances with every quest handled? Dungeon leveling in WoW Forever is set up exactly like that.

What Is the Fastest Way to Level in WoW Forever?

For most people it's a mix: quest, run every dungeon once with its quests, and grind only to close a gap. Nobody has timed a live 1–60 yet. The beta stops at level 30, and Blizzard still changes XP values every week. Still, the rules we already know make the comparison pretty clear.

ApproachStrengthWeakness
QuestingXP, gold and gear together; works solo at any hour; uses the 1,000+ new questsTravel between hubs; crowded zones in launch week
DungeonsQuest XP in bulk, blue boss drops, companyYou need a full group from your faction and ruleset; XP values are still moving
GrindingNo travel; pairs with rested XP and SkinningNo quest rewards; slow on its own
MixedQuest, run each dungeon once with its quests, grind only to close a gapNeeds a little planning

Dungeon XP is the part that keeps moving. After BlizzCon, the design leaned toward dungeon quests and away from clearing the same mobs again and again. Then on October 1 Blizzard cut the extra XP from dungeon quests in half, pointing to feedback on leveling speed.

A week later, on October 8, mobs inside dungeons got about 20% more XP. Blizzard also dropped a party penalty that had based your XP on the highest-level member of the group. The developers expect the two changes together to push dungeon XP up a lot for most players. You can read both in the official beta development notes.

Where does that leave you? One run per dungeon with its quests always pays. Whether farming the same dungeon beats questing, we'll only know on live servers.

Professions and Gear While Leveling

Professions cap at 300. You get two primary professions per character, plus Cooking, Fishing and First Aid as secondary ones. With no WoW Token, whatever you gather is your income. That's why two gathering professions are still the go-to for a first character:

  • Skinning pays on routes full of beasts. Since the October 1 beta build, each corpse can be skinned only once, so your leather comes from your own fresh kills.
  • Mining and Herbalism turn every ride between hubs into materials. Heads up: the same build cut Poor Copper Veins in the starter areas, so you'll see fewer early nodes than older videos show.
  • Cooking is the easy secondary pick. Crafted food gives you a small XP bonus on top of its stats.
  • First Aid means less sitting around. It now has variants too: bandages for bleeds, poultices for disease, and anti-venom.
  • Camping: at skill 20, the trainer gives you your first camp object for that profession. Think Sharpening Wheel for attack power or Incense Candle for intellect. Better camp objects come from Blueprints that dungeon bosses drop.

Crafting can wait for an alt that inherits your materials. The exception is if you want the Legacy points for crafting milestones early. Sell what you gather in the first weeks, when a fresh economy pays the most for it.

Gear mostly takes care of itself through quests and dungeons. Unique boss drops in Forever dungeons are blue or better, world-drop epics got better, and the level-up weapons for Warriors, Hunters and Rogues mean you're not stuck swinging an old stick for ten levels. Don't burn your riding gold on auction house gear you'll swap out two zones later.

Riding at Level 40 and 60

You train riding at 40 and epic riding at 60. Forever folds the cost into the lesson: you pay the riding instructor, learn the skill and walk out with a mount. No separate mount purchase.

You may have seen datamined training costs floating around. Blizzard hasn't confirmed them, and they could still change. So keep it simple. Start saving from your very first gathering sale, and 40 won't be the moment you find out your bags hold nothing but a few copper.

Paladins get a class mount quest at 60. Forsaken Paladins have their own skeletal charger version, with a new keep in Tirisfal. Before 40, your fastest travel is the new ships, flight paths and a well-placed hearthstone.

Rested XP, Legacy Perks and Other Time Savers

Blizzard hasn't announced any change to rested XP. So the old rule holds: it builds while you're logged out, faster in an inn or a capital city. It doubles your kill XP until it runs out, while quest XP stays the same. Log out in an inn, every single time.

  • Legacy perks for alts: Legacy Points are earned once per account, for example when a class hits 25, 45 and 60, and spent per character. Well Rested raises the rested cap and fills it faster. Pre-release data also shows Talented, which hands out talent points early, and Frequent Flier for cheaper, faster flights. Details are in our Legacy system guide.
  • Camps: a Basic Campfire lets you rest out in the world and pick up one-hour buffs. Profession camp objects stack more on top.
  • Quest log habits: turn in quests in batches, set your hearth where you'll come back, and drop the red and grey quests from zones you've left behind.
  • Crowds: in launch week the obvious zone is often the slow one. Ten people camping one boar spawn? Go to Hillsbrad instead of the Barrens, or Loch Modan instead of Westfall.

Leveling With Friends

Horde and Alliance can't group, and neither can players on different rulesets. On the PvP ruleset an account can only make characters for one faction, so settle all of this before launch.

A duo is one of the best ways to level. You share objectives, rest less, and dungeon groups come together faster if one of you tanks or heals. One old limit stays, though. If someone in the party is far above the enemy's level, nobody gets XP for that kill. Your level 60 friend clearing low mobs for you? That earns you nothing.

How Long Does Leveling Take in WoW Forever?

Nobody can give you a solid hour count yet. The beta stops at 30, XP is still being tuned, and the full route only opens on November 4. What we do know is what sets your pace: rest between fights, travel time, how many quests your zones offer, rested XP and launch-week crowds.

The new quest chains help most in the 30s and 40s, where the old map used to run dry. If time is what you're really short on, you can hand part of the climb to someone else. WoW Forever powerleveling covers any range from 1 to 60, and work starts on launch day.

Beta, Launch Dates and What Carries Over

Blizzard hasn't said beta characters carry over, so plan to start from level 1. These are the dates that matter for leveling:

  • Beta: level cap 30. The City of Dalaran dungeon opened for testing on October 9. The beta closes on October 21, then there's roughly a two-week pause.
  • October 27: character creation and name reservation.
  • November 4, 2026: launch, and everyone starts leveling.
  • December 9: The Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia's Lair open.

Got beta days left? Use them to learn the early zones and try a few classes. We'll update this WoW Forever leveling guide with live route data once the servers are up.

WoW Forever Leveling Guide FAQ

What is the best leveling route in WoW Forever?

Quest in your home zone to 10 and your second zone to about 20. Alliance then goes Redridge, Duskwood, Wetlands and Ashenvale. Horde goes Barrens, Stonetalon, Hillsbrad and Ashenvale. Around 35 to 45, both sides hit the new Riverglades. After that it's Tanaris, Feralas, the Hinterlands, Un'Goro, Felwood and the Plaguelands to 60.

At what level can you ride a mount in WoW Forever?

At 40, and epic riding at 60. You pay the riding instructor and get the mount with the lesson, so there's no vendor trip. Training costs have been datamined but not confirmed, so start saving from your first gathering sales. Paladins also get a class mount quest at 60, and Forsaken Paladins have their own version.

Is dungeon leveling good in WoW Forever?

One run per dungeon with its quests is clearly worth it. You get bulk quest XP and blue boss drops. Farming the same dungeon is still an open question. On the beta, Blizzard halved extra dungeon quest XP on October 1, then gave dungeon mobs about 20% more XP and dropped a party penalty on October 8.

What is the level cap in WoW Forever?

It's 60, and it stays 60 for good. No seasons wipe your character and nothing scales. The game grows sideways instead, with new zones, dungeons, raids and Legacy progress. On the beta the cap is 30 until it closes on October 21. Live servers open on November 4, 2026, and nothing from the beta is announced to carry over.

How is WoW Forever leveling different from WoW Classic?

Same cap, same zone order. On top you get four new zones, more than 1,000 quests and nine new dungeons. A solo fight lasts roughly 10 to 15 seconds whatever you play. Warriors, Hunters and Rogues get weapons as they level. Camps and XP food mean less sitting. Riding costs are paid as training, and Legacy perks speed up your alts.

Which professions are best for leveling in WoW Forever?

Take two gathering professions on your first character, usually Skinning with Mining or Herbalism. There's no WoW Token, so what you gather is your gold. Throw in Cooking for the small XP bonus on crafted food, and First Aid so you sit around less. At skill 20, each profession also gives you a camp object with a buff.
