Early in a character's life, gold feels plentiful. Repairs are cheap, vendors are rarely needed and the stash keeps growing. That changes once the character reaches endgame and starts improving gear rather than simply equipping it. Every serious upgrade step has a gold cost attached, and several of those costs grow each time you repeat the action.
The result is a familiar pattern: you finally loot the item your build needs, then spend an evening farming just to afford the rerolls and upgrades that make it usable. For players with limited time, that farming session is the part of the game they would happily skip.
Where Diablo 4 Gold actually goes
Most of the currency leaves your stash through a handful of town services. Knowing them helps you estimate how much you really need.
- Occultist enchanting. Rerolling an affix costs gold, and the price climbs with every attempt on the same item. Chasing one specific stat can drain a large balance quickly.

Seasonal or Eternal, Softcore or Hardcore
Gold is tied to the realm your character lives on. A balance on a Seasonal character does not appear on your Eternal characters, and Softcore and Hardcore keep separate economies as well. That is why every order starts with a realm choice:

- Gearing a whole build. Rerolling and masterworking several slots in a row multiplies the cost, so a larger balance saves you from stopping halfway.
- Changing builds. A respec plus re-enchanting the new gear is one of the most expensive moments in the game; budget for both.
- Hardcore play. Gold stays on the realm even if a character dies, so a reserve lets a new character catch up faster.

Gold together with items and materials
Gold is rarely the only thing an upgrade needs. Masterworking weapons, for example, also uses Baleful Fragments, and jewelry upgrades call for Abstruse Sigils.
